Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) has reached a significant milestone, securing environmental and construction approval for its 120-megawatt-hour (MWh) CERENERGY® GridPack production facility in Saxony, Germany. The approval, granted under Germany’s Federal Immission Control Act (BimSchG), marks a crucial step forward in the company's development strategy.
This achievement allows Altech’s joint venture subsidiary, Altech Batteries GmbH, to proceed with site clearing and construction activities, subject to the successful completion of project financing. The approval process, initiated in September 2023, involved collaboration with engineering subcontractor LEADEC and architecture and balance-of-plant subcontractor ARIKON.
Regulatory Green Light Strengthens Project Viability
Germany’s regulatory framework requires stringent environmental risk assessments before construction projects receive approval. The BimSchG certification ensures that projects align with environmental and safety standards, providing additional credibility to Altech’s operations.
With this approval in place, the company is strategically positioned to progress to the next phase. The green light for construction also plays a crucial role in securing financial backing, as institutional investors and financial entities typically favor projects that have cleared regulatory hurdles.
Strategic Planning Accelerates Project Execution
Altech Batteries took a proactive approach to the approval process, initiating licensing applications alongside its definitive feasibility study (DFS). By running these processes concurrently, the company has effectively minimized potential delays, ensuring that the project remains on track for timely execution.
Altech group managing director Iggy Tan highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “Receiving the final licensing approval for our 120 MWh CERENERGY® battery project at this stage underscores our dynamic and forward-thinking strategy. Our ability to efficiently manage multiple processes simultaneously puts us in a strong position to complete the financing phase. We are grateful for the authorities' recognition of our professional and responsible approach and appreciate their support.”
With environmental and construction approvals secured, Altech Batteries is poised to move ahead with its innovative battery production facility in Saxony. As financing discussions progress, the company remains focused on delivering a next-generation energy storage solution to meet the growing global demand.
