Highlights
- ADX Energy is set to test two major reservoirs to assess hydrocarbon characteristics and productivity.
- Preliminary findings suggest the Welchau-1 well may yield valuable light oil in commercial quantities.
- The development cycle for oil is shorter, potentially enhancing economic returns.
The ongoing exploration program by ADX Energy (ASX:ADX) aims to confirm the hydrocarbon characteristics of key reservoirs and evaluate well productivity, connected volumes, and recoverable resource estimates for future development wells. This initiative focuses on two major reservoirs: the deeper Steinalm and the shallower Reifling.
The testing program is designed to achieve several critical objectives, including:
- Identifying the reservoir fluid type present in key reservoirs.
- Evaluating the flow capacity in these reservoirs.
- Assessing the reserves potential of the identified reservoirs.
Valuable Light Oil Potential in Europe
Upon completion of the testing program, ADX Energy plans to revise its prospective resource estimates for the Welchau project. These estimates range from a low case of 12 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE) to a high case of 217 MMBOE, with the best estimate sitting at 46 MMBOE and a mean of 85 MMBOE. While it is still early to provide a definitive resource range, initial indications suggest that the product may lean towards oil rather than gas, which could offer significant commercial advantages.
The Welchau-1 discovery is anticipated to contain hydrocarbon liquids, specifically light oil, along with associated gas. This is particularly promising given the shallow drill depth and the onshore location, which is conveniently close to existing infrastructure in Austria.
As noted by ADX, "Austria has a state-of-the-art refinery located near Vienna, where ADX currently sells its oil production from the Anshof field and the Vienna Basin Fields." The potential for a significant light oil discovery could have a considerable economic impact in Austria, a country that imports approximately 92% of its crude oil requirements (around 130,000 barrels per day) and faces a refined product demand (approximately 170,000 barrels per day) that exceeds refinery production capacity by about 20%.
Advantages of Oil Development Cycle
The characteristics of light oil, such as that recovered from the Welchau-1 sampling, are likely to be highly valued in Europe, especially given the scarcity of condensates due to the high levels of imported dry gas via pipeline or LNG. Additionally, the development cycle for oil is considerably shorter than for gas, allowing for incremental development of any commercial discovery. This approach minimizes funding requirements while enhancing economic returns and payback timelines.
The Welchau-1 well, part of a broader exploration area where ADX Energy holds a 75% economic interest, aims to target reservoirs discovered in the nearby Molln-1 site, which previously tested condensate-rich gas at rates between 3-4 million standard cubic feet per day.
After reaching a depth of 1,733 meters on March 28 this year, drilling operations for Welchau-1 were paused due to Austrian regulations restricting drilling to winter months. As the program progresses, ADX Energy's initiatives in Austria continue to demonstrate promising potential for hydrocarbon exploration and production.
