Australia’s leading online travel platform, Webjet (ASX:WEB), has agreed to a $9 million penalty following allegations from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that the company misled consumers regarding airfare pricing. The ACCC took legal action, accusing the travel provider of promoting fares without clearly disclosing additional fees, which impacted customers over a period of more than five years.
The allegations focused on misleading price displays across various digital marketing channels, including social media, email promotions, the Webjet website, and its mobile application. According to the ACCC, these omissions resulted in customers being unaware of the full cost of their flights until the final stages of booking.
The penalty, as confirmed by Webjet, will be recognized as an expense in the company’s financial statements for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. It will be classified as a non-operating item and will not be included in the calculation of the company’s Underlying EBITDA.
The ACCC’s legal proceedings were initiated in November last year, emphasizing the importance of transparency in airfare pricing. The regulator stated that businesses must present all fees and charges upfront to ensure consumers can make informed purchasing decisions. In addition to the financial penalty, Webjet has also agreed to pay $100,000 in costs to the ACCC.
