  • $227M solar project approved for construction in 2025
  • 130MW Ruakākā Solar Farm to generate 230 GWh annually
  • Part of broader push to enhance energy security and sustainability

Meridian Energy (ASX:MEZ) is set to begin construction of its first solar farm in New Zealand, with the $227 million Ruakākā Solar Farm project officially approved and scheduled to commence in August 2025. Located near Whangārei, the 130-megawatt facility is expected to produce approximately 230 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year, delivering an average annual generation of 216 GWh.

The solar farm will span a site equivalent to 170 rugby fields and include around 250,000 solar panels. Once completed in early 2027, the project is projected to contribute $30 million annually in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). Meridian has awarded construction and operations contracts to Ethical Power, a firm specialising in renewable energy infrastructure.

This development marks a major step in Meridian’s transition toward expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The Ruakākā Solar Farm will sit alongside the company’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which is expected to be fully operational by April 2025. Together, these two assets will form the Ruakākā Energy Park, creating a robust renewable energy hub in Northland.

Beyond Ruakākā, Meridian is advancing several other large-scale renewable projects. These include the 90MW Mt Munro Wind Farm and the 400MW Te Rahui Solar Farm, the latter being developed in partnership with Nova Energy. These projects form part of a broader strategy to accelerate the country’s transition to clean energy and reduce reliance on thermal fuels.

Commenting on the project, Meridian’s Chief Executive, Neal Barclay, highlighted the strategic importance of Ruakākā in enhancing the country’s electricity supply and resilience. He noted that initiatives like this will play a crucial role in addressing energy demand, especially during dry years when hydro capacity is limited.

As global and domestic demand for clean energy continues to rise, the Ruakākā Solar Farm stands as a significant milestone in New Zealand’s renewable energy journey. For Meridian Energy, the project underscores its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term energy security through clean technology investment.
