One of Australia’s biggest telecommunication firms and satellite operators, Optus, has struck a deal with a startup, Space Machines Company (SMC). As per the deal, the two companies will focus on exploring options to develop sovereign space-launch capabilities for Australia’s future space requirements.

Space Machines Company is an Australian start-up working as an in-space transportation and logistics company. SMC builds infrastructure for the space economy and making use of it to provide orbital logistics and services to several customers, including both government and commercial. Additionally, the company is building sovereign transportation capabilities to economically place satellites in LEO (low-earth orbit), GEO (Geostationary), and Deep space orbits. Space Machines Company operates from the space industry hub in South Australia.
Details about the partnership
The partnership between Optus and SMC will require Optus to bring its experience as a satellite operator and SMC’s expertise as a spacecraft manufacturer, transporter, and service provider to the table. This cooperative effort will provide civil and defence applications to Australian space companies for building a sustainable space ecosystem over the next few years.
