On 11 February 2019, Weebit Nano Ltd (ASX:WBT), a company from the materials industry group and into the data memory technology business for developing and commercializing its ReRAM silicon oxide technology, announced that it is pursuing the development and commercialization of next-generation memory technology. For this, Technion from the Israel Institute of Technology has agreed to look at the possibility of using ReRAM memories in a novel computing architecture. The ReRAM memories will be tested to check the processing speed, memory bandwidth, the memory transfer rate with decreased processing latency.
The characterization and implementation of logic operations using the SiOx ReRAM test chips would be performed by WBT, along with the team from Israel Institute of Technology which will be led by Professor Shahar Kvatinsky. The process would help in demonstrating basic logic operations on a ReRAM array through Memristor Aided Logic technique, implementing âReal Processing in Memoryâ.Â
The ReRAM has a vast potential to be utilized as logic circuits and can bring revolution in the current computing architectures. In the traditional computing architecture, there was a clear distinction between processing and memory. The memory and the central processing unit were different devices. The memory in those computer systems served the purpose of storing data. From there, the CPU used to read and write the data which consumed a lot of time and energy. It also increased the power consumption of the chip, and as a result, the chip became relatively slow.
However, Real Processing in Memory (Real PIM) will be using the element of ReRAM as logic gates which allows the memory to perform logical operations inside the memory on the same device where the data will be stored. It would increase the processing speed and will also reduce the power consumption by 1000 times through evasion of the requirement to import or export data among the memory chip and CPU.
On 18 January 2018, WBT announced about the collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, one of the leading European universities in Italy, to launch Neuromorphic ReRAM project.
By the end of the Q2 of FY2019, the company successfully closed the Share Purchase Plan which was significantly oversubscribed. WBT successfully released data retention results across a 40nm array. It also amended the license agreement with the Rice University as well as extended its partnership with Leti. During the period, the company appointed Jackson Lam as its VP, Strategic Alliances in China.
During the period, WBT used A$3.123 million in its operating activities. Here, the company majorly used funds for making payments for research and development, staff cost and administration and corporate costs. The company generated revenue through the issue of shares. As a result, the net cash inflow through the financing activities was A$3.581 million.
For the last six months, the stock has generated a negative performance of 48.98%. The stock of the company is currently trading A$0.026 (as at 2:15 pm AEST, 12 February 2019). It has a market capitalization of A$39.78 million and approximately 1.59 billion shares outstanding.
