U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.48%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.48%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.11%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.99% or 6.42 points to trade at 221.46 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 2.14% or 2.24 points to end at 106.69 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.77% or 0.61 points to 35.14 in late trade.

Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 3.03% or 14.90 points to trade at 476.63 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 2.11% or 4.82 points to end at 224.03 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 1.45% or 2.32 points to 157.85.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which rose 5.83% to 45.00, Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which was up 4.33% to settle at 195.20 and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which gained 3.84% to close at 70.79.

The worst performers were Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was down 12.15% to 138.50 in late trade, Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ:PODD) which lost 4.92% to settle at 191.71 and Elevance Health Inc (NYSE:ELV) which was down 3.84% to 441.94 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which rose 461.22% to 55.00, Acer Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACER) which was up 109.84% to settle at 1.28 and Flora Growth Corp (NASDAQ:FLGC) which gained 77.31% to close at 3.83.

The worst performers were Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ:AXLA) which was down 39.43% to 0.23 in late trade, Sonnet Biotherapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SONN) which lost 28.34% to settle at 0.20 and VCI Global Ltd (NASDAQ:VCIG) which was down 26.15% to 4.18 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1549 to 1363 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1984 fell and 1491 advanced, while 127 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.23% to 13.57 a new 1-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.33% or 6.45 to $1,966.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 2.38% or 1.94 to hit $83.57 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.81% or 1.54 to trade at $86.78 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.75% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 145.49.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 103.60.
