Shares of Eclipse Metals Limited (ASX:EPM) witnessed a sharp rally, surging 8.7%, following the announcement of the latest results of the satellite imagery analysis for its Ivittuut Project.
Eclipse had appointed leading image processing expert Dr Daniel Core of Fathom Geophysics to analyse European Space Agency Sentinel-2 data pertaining to its multi-commodity Ivittuut Project (MEL2007/45) in SW Greenland. The imagery analysis was undertaken to delineate and study surface features relating to geology and mineralisation.
Commenting on the update, Eclipse Metals’ Executive Chairman Carl Popal said –
“We are delighted that Sentinel-2 satellite imagery analysis, which is a proven and cost-effective technology for screening large areas of exposed rock, has delivered new high-priority targets for REE and base metal mineralisation. We are planning to field check the highest-ranked anomalies as part of the ongoing summer exploration campaign.”
Sentinel-2 is a European multi-spectral imaging mission, constituting two identical satellites (Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B) in the same orbit. The mission collects visible bands with 10m resolution and visible to near-infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands at 20/60m resolution. At places where the geology is reasonably exposed, spectrally enhanced Sentinel imagery can be utilised as a complementary tool for geological mapping and interpretation.

The satellite imagery data were sourced from the Copernicus Open Access Hub and compiled together to form the datasheet for the entire Ivittuut project. Mineral indexes, spectral correlation and ternary maps were generated, highlighting possible geological and hydrothermal mineralisation/alteration features.

The data analysis delineated multiple spectral anomalies indicating hydrothermal alteration associated with iron oxides, sulphides and/or clays. Some of the highly prospective anomalies include -
First anomaly: A prominent anomaly at the historic Ivittuut cryolite mine is marked by a strong (80th percentile), spatially coincident jarosite index, indicating a strong probability of sulphides, goethite index, indicating the presence of iron oxides) and kaolinite index, demonstrating the presence of clays, over a 900m by 400m area. The anomaly is covered by historic waste dumps, which contain rocks with grades up to 165.00 g/t silver, 0.15% copper, 3.83% lead and 0.37% zinc.

Second anomaly – Another anomaly (80th percentile), spatially coincident jarosite, goethite and kaolinite index anomaly over 700m by up to 230m area was delineated in the central-northern Grønnedal-Ika syenite-carbonatite complex. The geological setting is considered highly prospective for REE mineralisation and was also confirmed by rock chip sample assay results with grades up to 3.45% of total rare elements (TREE). The anomaly will be ground tested and sampled.
Third anomaly – Yet another strong anomaly (80th percentile), coincident jarosite, goethite and the kaolinite index were delineated over dolerite and basalt dykes cutting the Grønnedal-Ika complex. The anomaly hosts vertically extensive magnetic bodies, which were delineated by Eclipse during the 3D modelling of airborne magnetic data at the Grønnedal-Ika complex. The analysis of the satellite imagery has outlined areas with strong magnetic anomalism and coincident REE mineralisation.
