The construction work for the Melbourne Airport Rail link worth AU$10 billion has begun. It is going to be the first direct rail link connecting the Melbourne airport from Victoria through the Metro Tunnel. The rail link connects 30 stations across the Melbourne city.
The construction of the rail link has begun from Keilor East, where a new station is being built to connect more than 150,000 passengers in Moonee Valley City to Victoria’s rail network for the first time. The project is expected to get completed within 2029.
This project is a part of a bigger plan for the State Government’s AU$125 billion Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) development project. This project aims to deliver an orbital railway stretching 90 km between Cheltenham and Werribee across four stages.
The initial estimation of the railway link project is between AU$8 billion and AU$13 billion. Both the Victorian and the Federal Government has co-founded the project with an initial amount of AU$5 million. Furthermore, another investment worth AU$143 million from the State Government will enable the progress of delivery from the Sunshine Precinct Masterplan supporting the new works.
After the completion of this project, passengers from CBD will be able to reach Melbourne airport within just 30 minutes. On the other hand, passengers from Ballarat will be able to reach the airport in only 90 minutes.
