  • The Australian Post is struggling to hire new employees amidst the labour shortage in the country.

Paul Graham, chief executive of Australia Post, has insisted citizens to order their Christmas presents now only if they want to get them delivered within Christmas. Paul mentioned that the Australian postal service is currently struggling to recruit more people to handle pressure during the festive season.

Paul also added that the ongoing supply chain disruption caused due to the impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war, COVID-19 pandemic and labour shortages across the economy have made it challenging for Australia’s postal service to improve its parcel business in the country.

Although the Australian Post has begun hiring extra 5000 to 7000 workers required for the Christmas holiday peak, finding workers was very challenging due to the tight labour market, said Paul Graham at an Australian British Chamber of Commerce lunch in Melbourne.

The chief executive of the Australian post affirmed by saying that “Now” is the appropriate time to order Christmas presents for your loved ones. Furthermore, he also added that “we are ready for it”. He also believes that this time merchants are better prepared than in comparison to the last couple of years.

On the other hand, Paul Graham also mentioned that there might be a lot of challenges in delivering parcels if they experience a similar type of rising in sales as in the last couple of years. If people choose to save their money due to a rise in interest rates, then the post will be in good share, as per Paul.

Paul also commented by saying, “We are all fishing in the same pool”, through which he indicated that the Australian Post is struggling as much as other companies to recruit new employees as there is a labour shortage in the country. He mentioned that the real challenge was not in paying new workers but in finding them amidst the labour shortage in Australia.

Additionally, the Australian Post was also looking for thousands of more drivers and forklift operators apart from hiring staff for the Christmas season.
