With the new establishment comes new agreements. One of the most significant defence agreements is currently going on between India and Australia.
India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
In 2009, both countries had agreed and entered into a bilateral strategic partnership. However, this agreement was upgraded and turned into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020. Under this new tie-up, India and Australia could share each other’s defence base camps for logistical support.
Amid rising international instability and insecurities because of the Russian war and complications both nations share with China, they have decided to come into a more nuanced defence partnership for the betterment of their economies and the entire Indo-Pacific region.

India, Australia exploring new initiatives to expand bilateral ties
Recently, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles visited India to discuss new possibilities for deepening bilateral ties between the two nations. After the victory of the Labor government in the Federal elections, this was the first visit of one of Australia’s significant member of the parliament to India.
Future meetings on defence research and material cooperation are likely to occur in Australia in the coming months. Notably, defence ties between the two nations have been on the rise since the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020.
Now, the two economies might focus on building operational engagements through the India-Australia Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement. The primary premise of the mutual agreement is based on the shared vision for the open, free, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
Additionally, in the meeting in India, both parties discussed enhancing the industrial support needed for strengthening the supply chain for the defence sectors of both nations. Australia and India are simultaneously looking for means to establish better possibilities of opportunities between the two countries.
