NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has lashed South Sydney for playing with an extra man for roughly 20 seconds of the round-nine win over Brisbane and warned there would be imminent repercussions.

In the 53rd minute of Friday's match at Suncorp Stadium, State of Origin representative Jai Arrow came on as a replacement for Thomas Burgess.

But the English prop remained on the field for a short time, participating in tackles and taking a run before hurrying back to the bench.

An NRL spokesperson confirmed to AAP the league will review the ground manager's report before deciding what action to take.

Canterbury were stripped of two competition points for a similar breach in a 2009 defeat of Penrith after Ben Roberts, the last replacement player to take the field, scored the match-winning try for the Bulldogs.

But given the Rabbitohs' breach did not take place in a try-scoring situation and had no impact on the eventual result, the Rabbitohs' punishment is likely to be less severe.

The NRL has an official on the sidelines monitoring interchanges but Abdo confirmed the onus was on clubs to ensure no errors were made.

"It shouldn't happen, it's not good enough," Abdo told The Continuous Call Team

"We need to have controls in place to make sure that it doesn't happen again and obviously there has to be accountability for that.

"There's a full review well underway. We'll look to finalise that on Monday as we do all matters over the weekend across all eight games.

"It's disappointing it's occurred. The interchange is the responsibility of the clubs and so something has gone wrong. We'll get to the bottom and we'll take the appropriate action."

The Rabbitohs had already assembled a 22-6 lead at the time they had 14 men on the field and eventually ran out 32-6 victors.

The NRL's head of football Graham Annesley will address the incident in his weekly briefing on Monday.
