Sam Kerr has scored in a fourth successive Women's Super League game for Chelsea as they crushed bottom club Leicester 8-0 to maintain their three-point lead at the top.

The Matildas' captain is making up for lost time after a slow start to the season by her prolific striking standards, having now scored five WSL goals this term as she bids to become the golden boot winner as league top scorer for the third campaign in a row.

She's currently three goals behind the leading pair, Manchester City's Khadija Shaw and Aston Villa's Rachel Daly, but may have been left just a little frustrated that she didn't get even closer while her teammates helped themselves in a goal fest on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).

Kerr had already hit the post with one shot and squandered a couple more chances in a goal-laden first half at Leicester before she finally hit the target just before the break with Chelsea's fifth.

She finished emphatically after being found by a superb ball from Guro Reiten, the Norway international who provided four assists in all as well as opening the scoring after just four minutes during an outstanding performance.

Kerr was eventually brought off for a rest just after the hour as Chelsea continued to run riot with Fran Kirby and Jessie Fleming both eventually scoring twice, and Niamh Charles and Beth England also getting on the scoresheet.

The blow-out win put the champions three points ahead but they've played a game more than both Manchester United and Arsenal, who kept up the pursuit with victories.

Kerr's Matildas colleagues Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley were, not for the first time this season, influential in Arsenal's 1-0 win over Everton.

Foord came close to scoring late on and laid on the brilliant 24th minute winner for star Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema, who wrong-footed two defenders and smashed her right-foot shot into the top corner.

United proved far too good in the 5-0 crushing of Aston Villa, for whom Matildas striker Emily Gielnik made a welcome but fruitless return for the Midlanders for the last half-hour after recovering from recent injury woes.
