Adelaide wonderkid Nestory Irankunda refuses to make a European move before he is ready, saying he is mindful of becoming the latest crash-and-burn story of Australian football.
Irankunda, 17, was linked with a move to German powerhouse Bayern Munich over the weekend after a breakout season in the A-League Men.
The teenager, who is expected to feature for the Reds in Friday's elimination final against Wellington, was called up to the most recent Socceroos squad as a train-on player.
His rise has led to speculation linking him with a move to Europe but the winger, who has made a habit of scoring late goals for Adelaide, said he wanted to refine his game on home soil before moving overseas.
"It's only my second season in the league, I might need more than two, three or four seasons," Irankunda told AAP.
"I'm not going to rush (to leave) just because it's all about Europe.
"It's about my career. I'm not trying to ruin my career because I reckon I can go far.
"There's been a lot of Australian players who have made the wrong moves and things didn't go too well for them.
"So I'm trying not to make that mistake, I'm trying to be mature about it."
Whatever happens, the talented winger will remain under Carl Veart's tutelage for next season at least.
FIFA's transfer laws will prevent him making a move to Europe before his 18th birthday, which comes after the transfer window next January.
Irankunda's development is so nascent at first-team level he has yet to start a senior game but he says the recent Socceroos experience has fuelled his fire to win his first cap.
"I'm at one of the best stages of my life," Irankunda said.
"I'm still 17 and a Socceroos call-up was always a dream of mine.
"I want to do it all over again and I'm going to be pushing to be there. It's something I'm proud of."
