Newcastle's viability could be under threat unless the A-Leagues club finds a permanent owner, coach Arthur Papas says.
The Jets have been under the control of a consortium made up of several fellow A-Leagues clubs after previous owner Martin Lee was stripped of the licence in January 2021 for failing to inject any money into the club or pay off debts.
There have been talks about potential new owners over the years, but no official offers have eventuated.
Papas is contracted for next season but was clearly frustrated by the club's almost three-year ownership limbo.
"I don't think the most important part is who's the coach, who's the players, the most important part is getting some stability into this club," he told reporters.
"I've been very clear that I'm very grateful and the club and the community should be very grateful to the ownership group that are currently in charge but it's bordering on three years now, I think.
"It's not easy to sell a club and also you don't want to lose a club because that's the threat. If you don't have ownership, you'll lose the whole club.
"Ultimately, I think if we're going to look for a signing in the off-season, I think that's the biggest signing we can make."
Papas indicated the club's ownership woes had hampered its ability to attract and retain players.
"I'm aware of some of the ones that we're losing," Papas said.
"We've made, from a club point of view, some good offers to a couple (of players), but we're not competing with some clubs in this league.
"We've got some factors around how we operate which probably is a disadvantage for us."
The Jets' 2023 campaign came to an end after a 2-0 loss to a surging Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
Reflecting on the season, Papas cited his coaching style, recruitment and the club's processes as areas to scrutinise.
"I've got to reflect on that and understand why that hasn't happened," he said.
"And the first person that needs to be assessed is myself and why that's the case."
