The ubiquitous cell phone has not only shaped the way people communicate, but also their choice of entertainment. In recent years, mobile-phone gaming has become a multi-billion-dollar industry.
Australian-headquartered technology company, Nanoveu Limited (ASX: NVU) is targeting this lucrative market via the development of mobile games. To increase user engagement, the company uses its proprietary, highly immersive 3D screen technology for developing mobile games.
Nanoveu provides hardware and software that enables viewing 3D without using 3D glasses on smartphones. The company has developed highly captivating screen protectors for the international smartphone market.
The company’s flagship product is EyeFly3DTM, which transforms 2D digital displays into 3D without any requirement for 3D glasses. EyeFly3DTM has so far been used to convert photos, videos and mobile games (the latest one) from 2D into immersive 3D. The product has won many industry awards and is presently available for Google Pixel 3 smartphones and Apple iPhones.
Nanoveu’s Business Strategy
Nanoveu’s strategy is to target its EyeFly3DTM products to consumers making use of smartphones for mobile gaming. The company also focusses on encouraging game developers to boost the number of mobile phone games supporting the EyeFly3DTM technology. The company intends to reach new consumer groups by broadening the application of EyeFly3DTM screen protectors.
Progressing with its mobile gaming strategy, the company has recently released the EyeFly3DTM Software Development Kit, which enables mobile game developers to create 3D games for tablets and smartphones. The company has also announced its first mobile game compatible with the EyeFly3DTM technology, “Ted Defense 3D”.
Let us take a quick look at these two announcements below:
EyeFly3DTM Software Development Kit
Mobile game developers can now readily upgrade the features of existing games for use with the EyeFly3DTM technology via Nanoveu’s Software Development Kit (SDK), which will be available for games built on the world’s most popular platform, Unity.
Unity is the creator of the leading real-time mobile game development platform, which has provided the developers with tools to create rich, interactive 2D, 3D, AR and VR experiences. It is the platform of choice for developers of mobile games across the world, through which about half of all the new mobile games have been developed.
Nanoveu’s Software Development Kit will enable mobile games to be played in an ultra-immersive mode when combined with the EyeFly3DTM screen protector, with landscapes and characters literally “popping out” in 3D from the display. The new kit that will create more engaging, more interactive and richer gaming experiences, will be available for free to game developers.
Ted Defense 3D – First 3D Game
Nanoveu has also developed a 3D version of an existing game to showcase 3D gaming on smartphones, integrating its EyeFly3DTM technology. The new mobile game, Ted Defense 3D, is available for download from Apple’s iOS App store across the world. It is an action-shooter game, which can be played in either 2D or 3D versions and is free of charge with the option of in-app purchases.
The original 2D version of this new mobile game was “Dream Defense”, which had over a million downloads prior to being converted into Ted Defense 3D via the EyeFly3DTM SDK.
Nanoveu and Altitude Games worked together to add 3D content to an existing 2D game. Founded in 2014, Altitude Games was established by the experts of the Southeast Asian game industry to bring the best Asian mobile games to the rest of the world.
Key Milestones Achieved in September 2019 Quarter
Below are the two significant developments observed by the company during the September 2019 quarter:
Expansion to Android Smartphones
Nanoveu expanded its flagship product EyeFly3DTM for the first time to Android smartphones in August 2019. The company notified that its new screen protectors will be initially available for use on a range of Google Pixel phones and will be sold on all the existing distribution channels.
Besides Google Pixel phones (Google Pixel 3, 3 XL, 3a, and 3a XL), the company plans to develop more screen protector variants for other types of tablets and phones depending on market demand.
Completion of First Stage Vending Machine Trial for Screen Protector
Nanoveu completed the first stage of patented vending machine trial during the quarter, that was performed in factory trials and included visits by prospective customers. The vending machine installs screen protectors with accuracy and reduces installation wastage. The company expects the first vending machines to be trialled by established retailers later this year.
The company is in discussion with potential distribution partners to introduce machines in established retail locations. The use of vending machines offers an opportunity to the company for working with well-known retailers to distribute its products.
Nanoveu’s Forward Plans
In order to create additional demand for its EyeFly3DTM products, the company is seeking to develop additional 3D games by engaging with game developers to integrate 3D into proposed and existing mobile games.
The company is also developing a vision-correction technology, EyeFyx combining a screen protector and software to help people with presbyopia view digital content without needing to wear reading glasses.
