Evion Group secures EU backing to develop its Madagascar graphite project
Strategic infrastructure plans underway to improve export capacity
Local community development prioritised in EU–Madagascar graphite partnership
Evion Group NL (ASX:EVG) has taken a major step forward in the critical minerals sector as the company progresses the development of its Maniry Graphite Project in Madagascar. The project is gaining traction within the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials framework, positioning it among globally strategic resources. As an ASX 300 and All Ordinaries listed entity, Evion is aligning with the EU’s efforts to diversify and secure raw material supply chains.
Engagements with EU-backed advisors and funding bodies have accelerated the company’s development roadmap. These meetings included strategic discussions around fast-tracking approvals and enhancing the project’s logistical capabilities for large-scale graphite exports.
Maniry Project Earns Unique Status in EU Raw Materials Program
Maniry has gained a distinctive status as the only African graphite development recognised under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials initiative. This recognition affords Evion several advantages, including expedited permitting processes and broader access to institutional and development financing. It also strengthens the company’s alignment with offtake partners seeking long-term supply agreements.
Madagascar’s expanding role as a leading graphite exporter outside of China plays into Europe’s broader push for supply chain resilience. With geopolitical uncertainties affecting raw material flows, Maniry is strategically placed to meet demand from downstream applications including battery anode production.
Infrastructure Improvements Poised to Support Project Growth
Evion is also set to benefit from planned infrastructure upgrades across southwest Madagascar. Discussions are ongoing between the EU advisory group and local authorities regarding the development of a west coast port, which could drastically improve the export capabilities of graphite from Maniry.
This would be complemented by ongoing World Bank-supported road developments aimed at improving regional connectivity. Enhancements to road infrastructure, including a major bypass link to the RN7 highway and the port city of Toliara, are expected to reduce costs and streamline the movement of mined materials.
Community Engagement and Training Programs Underway
While the Maniry project advances its development goals, Evion is maintaining its focus on social outcomes. The company is working with EU-aligned advisors to roll out training and employment programs tailored to local community needs. These initiatives are geared toward long-term sustainability, offering opportunities in both construction and future mining operations.
Efforts are also underway to secure grant funding to initiate early-phase community development initiatives, with a strong emphasis on creating enduring economic and educational benefits.
EU-Madagascar Trade Pathways Enable Seamless Integration
Maniry’s outlook is further supported by the robust trade relationship between Madagascar and the European Union. As a member of the Eastern and Southern Africa trade bloc, Madagascar enjoys duty-free and quota-free access to the EU for qualifying goods. This provides a stable export framework for graphite, aligning with Europe’s raw material diversification objectives.
With an eye on global electrification trends and growing battery-grade graphite demand, the Maniry Graphite Project continues to evolve as a key contributor to Europe's clean energy ambitions. The collaboration between Evion, European partners, and local stakeholders signals growing international alignment on critical mineral development strategies.
