Mercedes-Benz owner, Daimler has settled to pay $1.5bn (£1.2bn) to settle US government claims that it constructed its diesel vehicles to deceive air pollution tests. The firm was probed for mounting software to dodge emissions laws in 250,000 Mercedes vehicles. US officials said they anticipated the fine would prevent potential misconduct. Apart from the $1.5bn payment to the US authorities, Daimler said it had agreed to pay $700m to settle a class action lawsuit brought by owners.
London City airport will be making one third of its staff redundant in the latest job cuts in the pummeled aviation sector. The airport, situated in east London largely serves a business clientele. It has started its consultation for axing upto 239 job as a part of their restructuring plan to safeguard its future. London City shut down for three months at the height of the pandemic and, after reopening in late June, is now operating only 17 routes. Most staff were furloughed, and the airport has until now avoided the widespread job cuts seen around the sector.
Pizza delivery tycoon Dominos will be adding 5,000 new jobs to boost over 1,000 placements in the government’s Kickstart scheme as it prepares itself for the busiest time of year. The 5,000 new openings include pizza chefs, delivery drivers and customer service staff, and are in addition to the 6,000 new jobs proffered since the outbreak of the pandemic. Dominos has also vowed to deliver over 1,000 work placements for young people in outlets across England, Scotland and Wales under the Government’s Kickstart scheme.
