  • In the UK, currently minimum contribution towards pensions is 8% of eligible earnings and the contribution is made by both employee and employer.
  • The minimum contribution is not sufficient for many employees to enjoy a comfortable retirement, experts said.

With the rising costs, uncertainty, and inflationary pressure in the UK, a committee of MPs said that more than half of households don’t have enough savings to maintain the same living standards after retirement.

Phil Brown, director of policy for B&CE, said that the research they are doing with the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) revealed that more than half of the UK households will not achieve the adequacy rate set by the Pension Commission.

The research used data from the Wealth and Assets Survey, which found that around 54% of UK households were not saving enough to meet rates set by the Pension Commission in 2004. B&CE also said that even after taking additional assets and housing into account over a third of households will not be able to maintain their living standards.

In the UK, currently, the minimum contribution towards pensions is 8% of the earnings, and the contribution is made by both employee and employer. This amount is expected to be not sufficient for many employees to enjoy a comfortable retirement.
