The FTSE 100 stands for the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index, which refers to the list of 100 largest companies in the UK listed on the London Stock Exchange based on their market capitalisation. FTSE 100 is also popularly known as Footsie, FTSE 100 Index, FTSE. The listing is determined by the market capitalisation of a company, it is calculated by multiplying current share price of a company with shares outstanding. The FTSE 100 is considered as one of the best indicators in the UK and overall economy’s health as it has both domestic and international companies listed.

Formation of FTSE 100

The FTSE 100 index was established on 3 January 1984 and widely used as a performance indicator of the UK economy and the performance benchmark for the investors. The top 100 companies of FTSE 100 are blue chip companies including multinationals and British companies. The share price of a company changes, and so does its market capitalization. As a result the overall index of FTSE 100 will change in value, with companies ranking going up and down depending on the share prices of the constituent companies.

Criteria for listing on FTSE 100

A company must qualify the number of requirements or criteria set by the financial times stock exchange group including:

  • A company should be fully listed on the London Stock Exchange with a sterling denominated price on SETS.
  • A company should clear some screen tests such as accurate price, minimum voting right (greater than 5%), liquidity.
  • If a company becomes a legal corporation in the UK, then a company's security must have minimum 25% of free float. If it is not incorporated (legal corporation) in the UK then a company must have more than 50% for its inclusion in the FTSE.
  • A company is ranked based on their market capitalisation in order to determine the size of a company.
