Competition has been called off for the first two scheduled days of the World Surf League's third stop at Supertubos in Portugal as organisers wait for better conditions.

World Surf League (WSL) officials will reconvene at 7.15am local time on Friday (6.15pm AEDT) and hope to get competition underway shortly afterwards.

"We have super strong onshore, southwest winds, some of the worst for here in Supertubos," the WSL's director of tours and competition Renato Hickel said.

"The good news is we have a cold front approaching Portugal and it's going to deliver west swell for the entire waiting period.

"We're going to have to deal with the winds but we should be able to get underway soon, possibly Friday."

Australians currently head the men's and women's leaderboards for 2023.

Jack Robinson's semi-final showing in February's Hurley Pro was enough to keep him at the top of the men's leaderboard after two events while Molly Picklum's victory at the event at Hawaii's Sunset Beach was her first WSL final success.

She shares the yellow jersey with Carissa Moore as the women's rankings leader.

Picklum is scheduled to take on fellow Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons and US surfer Caroline Marks in the first round at Portugal's Rip Curl Pro.

Tyler Wright, reigning world champion Stephanie Gilmore, Sophie McCulloch, Isabella Nichols and Macy Callaghan round out the Australian women.

In the men's draw, Robinson heads an Aussie contingent that also includes Ethan Ewing - who goes against the legendary Kelly Slater in heat one - Connor O'Leary, Liam O'Brien, Ryan Callinan, Jackson Baker and Callum Robson.
