Summary

  • Democrat representative in the US Congress Nancy Pelosi announced that her party would go ahead with plans to impeach the sitting president Donald Trump.
  • However, Vice President Mike Pence might invoke the 25th amendment, which means that Mr Trump could be out of the office before the Inauguration Day.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi announced that the Representatives would go ahead with the efforts of removing the current US President Donald J Trump from the White House after chaos at the Capitol Hill, and death of five civilians during the protests.

Mr Trump has less than two weeks left in the office before the official transition of power on 20th Jan, when President-elect Joe Biden takes over as the 46th American president.

As the head Democrat in the American Congress, Ms Pelosi will call for invoking the 25th amendment, a part of the US Constitution that labels the president as ‘unfit for office’, and ultimately his removal from the office.

However, Vice President Mike Pence has the final say in the 25th amendment. If Mr Pence does not invoke the amendment, the Congress will proceed with Mr Trump’s impeachment, said Ms Pelosi:

If Mr Trump gets impeached again, he will be the first American president in history to become impeached twice while holding a seat at the White House. In December 2019, Democrats accused Mr Trump of contacting the Ukrainian president to find dirt on Joe Biden.

However, the Republican majority in the Congress saved Mr Trump, ensuring he stays in power in the world’s most powerful country.

Following fellow Democrats, some Republican politicians have called for Mr Trump’s impeachment, saying it is the right thing to do after brutal and violent events at Capitol Hill.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey said that Mr Trump had engaged in an unforgivable activity that brought the already divided and damaged country to its knees.

Other Republican senators Lisa Murkowski and Adam Kinzinger supported Mr Toomey’s statement, adding they want Mr Trump out of the office before the Inauguration Day.

What would it take to impeach Mr Trump?

Impeaching a president is a long and a hard process, which needs the approval from many senators.

After the House of Representatives’ final vote on Monday, there must be a trial where a two-third majority of Senators needs to agree to convict the president and remove him from the post of president.

However, some law experts do not think that the Senate could even begin with the impeachment before the Inauguration Day.

What is the current security situation in America?

FBI is still seeking rioters that attacked the White House last week, with more and more people getting imprisoned for their violent acts.

The country’s officials stepped up in putting up a temporary fence around the White House, which has brought more law enforcement to critical areas.

Even though the authorities made a lot of effort to enhance the overall security, right-wing extremists and Trump supporters revealed more planned attacks before the Inauguration Day.
