Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler has come under spotlight after she attempted to steer clear of a question during a Sunday night debate held in Georgia.

Loeffler’s evasive reaction came in response to a question regarding the senators’ ability to trade stocks while holding office.

Ms Loeffler, who is married to the New York Stock Exchange Chairman Jeffrey Craig Sprecher, reportedly sold shares worth millions of dollars before the pandemic.

The multimillion-dollar transaction occurred after Ms Loeffler received a debrief from the health officials in January earlier this year. Consequently, the Department of Justice investigated the possibility of insider trading but did not pursued any legal charges against the Republican Senator.

Another government body Senate Ethics Committee, which is controlled by the GOP (Republican party), had also exonerated cleared Ms Loeffler’s name of any wrongdoings.

Ms Loeffler explained that third-party consultants managed both hers and her husband’s stocks and had dismissed the accusations.

According to the STOCK Act 2012, Senators are not allowed to misuse non-public information about the stock market for their personal benefits.

What happened during the debate?

After the moderator asked the controversial question, Ms Loeffler skirted around the issue by calling it “an attack on the American dream”, while branding the situation as a lie and a conspiracy theory created by the left-wing.

Throughout the debate, Ms Loeffler kept repeating the importance of the ‘American dreams’ on numerous occasions, which resulted in comedians, TV presenters, and other politicians having a field day mocking her. Taking a dig at her repetitive answers, some called her out for acting like “a robot”.

Ms Loeffler’s Democratic rival Reverend Raphael Warnock accused the Republican of not supporting the Congress’s relief program that was supposed to bring an additional US$600 to Georgian households. At the same time, she allegedly received millions while protecting her fortune in January.

She responded that she had worked tirelessly to bring Georgians the help they need in spring when the pandemic hit the US.

Another Republican Senator David Perdue is also facing crucial elections on 5 January. Mr Perdue was also accused of insider trading, after making almost 3,000 trade transactions over six years of holding the office. According to some sources, Mr Purdue is the politician who executed the most significant amount of stock sales out of any senator.

However, the Department of Justice did not engage in legal actions against Mr Perdue.

Why was the debate important?

The election runoffs currently happening in Georgia will determine which political party will have a majority seating in the US Senate.

That decision is crucial because it will clarify what decisions will be passed on during the president-elect Joe Biden’s first term.

Mr Biden is the first Democrat to win the highest number of votes in Georgia in almost 30 years. The president-elect won by more than 12,000 votes, which was proven twice after recounting the ballots. The governor has also confirmed Mr Biden’s victory.

Ever since, President Donald Trump has been reiterating the allegations of election fraud, for which no proof exists. Ms Loeffler has also supported Mr Trump in wanting to find the truth, mentioning 250 active investigations that are looking into the alleged fraud.
