It would not be an exaggeration to say that Parag Agrawal would definitely be among the most searched Indians online today. Reportedly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, immediately after acquiring Twitter, has fired Agrawal from the post of chief executive officer. Along with Agrawal, Musk also sacked legal head Vijaya Gadde and chief financial officer Ned Segal from their respective posts.  

It should be noted that Musk recently had tweeted a video of himself walking in Twitter’s headquarters with a kitchen sink in his hand. He had captioned it, ‘Let that sink in’. Adding to the drama, Musk now has updated his Twitter account's description to ‘Chief Twit’.

The US$44 billion deal has garnered a lot of attention today and so are the ones who have been impacted by the transaction. Parag Agrawal has been making rounds of news as reports say he has been fired from his role as CEO of Twitter.

Who is Parag Agrawal?

  • Parag Agrawal is a 38-year-old Indian American software engineer.
  • He was born in the state of Rajasthan, India and he got to study at the Atomic Energy Central School in Mumbai.
  • Parag Agrawal has completed bachelor’s in technology degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
  • He had secured a silver medal at the IIT and was awarded the Young Alumni Achiever Award in 2019. 
  • Parag later moved to the US to pursue a PhD in computer science at Stanford University.
  • He has held research internships at companies like Microsoft and Yahoo!.
  • Parag Agrawal had joined Twitter as a software engineer in 2011.
  • Parag Agarwal was promoted to the post of chief technology officer in October 2017.
  • In 2019, then Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that Parag would lead the company’s Project Bluesky.
  • In 2021, Dorsey announced that he is quitting the organisation and Parag Agrawal would replace him as the new CEO of Twitter.
  • Parag was recognised as the youngest CEO leading a Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) company.

In 2017, when Parag was promoted to the role of Twitter CTO, Jack Dorsey, in his official email to all Twitter employees, stated that after running a rigorous process, the board has elected Parag as he deeply understands the company and its needs.
