Michael Voss might be Carlton coach but he will forever be a Brisbane Lions legend.

The three-time Lions premiership captain flew up to his home state of Queensland for Sunday's AFLW grand final between the Lions and Melbourne as the club opened the oval named in his honour.

Even though he's embarking on his second pre-season as Blues coach, Voss was not going to miss the unveiling of the Lions' new state-of-the-art complex.

After years of training at the outdated Gabba facilities and temporary training grounds around Brisbane, the Lions have finally moved out to suburban Springfield.

"Being a former Queenslander and growing up and seeing the expansion of the game, this takes on an even bigger meaning," Voss told the Seven Network.

"I might be Carlton coach right now, but I've been an ambassador for Queensland football for a long period of time, so to see the growth of the game has been pretty significant."

Voss is undeniably the biggest figure in Queensland's Australian Rules football history, having played 289 games for the Bears and Lions between 1992 and 2006.

The Hall-of-Fame midfielder led the Lions to a premiership three-peat in 2001-03 and won the Brownlow Medal in 1996.

Voss coached the Lions from 2009-13, starting aged just 33, before spending seven years as an assistant at Port Adelaide.

The 47-year-old was finally given a second opportunity in the senior AFL coaching ranks when he was appointed Carlton boss ahead of the 2022 season.
