Tourist dies in fall at WA national park

A tourist has died after losing his footing and falling at a national park in Western Australia's north.

The 68-year-old luxury cruise passenger suffered a serious head injury in the fall, which happened during a shore excursion to Prince Regent National Park in the Kimberley region on Thursday.

He was flown by helicopter to Koolan Island and met by Royal Flying Doctor Service crews but died soon after.

Cruise operator True North said it was assisting the man's family.

"The guest lost his footing whilst descending a (one) metre rocky decline and fell heavily," a spokesman said on Friday.

"Crew and a doctor travelling with the group provided immediate first aid."

A report will be prepared by police for the coroner.
