Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI), Nelson-based international helicopter operator, established in 2017, provides customer-centric helicopter services and works across 4 continents.
PHI takes up tough assignments within aviation, providing support for marine pilot transfers, oil and gas exploration, production, and search and rescue operations.
PHI, which was earlier named Helicopters New Zealand, supports businesses across NZ, Philippines, Australia, Cyprus, Ghana and Saudi Arabia.
Keith Mullet, MD of PHI, states that a typical workday focuses more on overseas operations compared to NZ and can be quite overwhelming sometimes. He says that the Company often fails to connect with the local business community and other stakeholders as frequently as it should.
Extension of a transport contract
In December, PHI announced that following the expansion of a deal between PHI International (PHI) and a group of multinational clients, New Plymouth would stay as the central transport centre for workers in the Taranaki offshore gas sector.
In the 3-year extension, PHI can use 2 AW139 aircraft to carry passengers and freight to 5 offshore services, running off the New Plymouth coast on behalf of Beach Energy, Jadestone Energy, and OMV.
PHI has been flying offshore to the Maui gas field since 1969. It began its partnership with OMV in 2003, with Beach Energy in 2018, and is expected to collaborate with Jadestone Energy in 2021.
Extension of the contract was considered a good sign for the local economy by PHI as it moved towards 2021.
Commitment to sustainability
PHI also made its first formal contribution to sustainability in the aviation sector, focusing on 5 particular fields on creating more sustainable business governance and improved environmental performance. These are Diversity and Inclusion, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Environment, Community, and Governance and Business Ethics.

Mr Mullet stated that the group would work closely with seasoned business partners and consumers to pursue an aggressive programme, which over the next 10 years, seeks to substantially minimise its carbon emissions and other environmental factors.
PHI International has united with the Sustainable Business Council of New Zealand as part of its environmental pledge and is the country's first helicopter operator to become a member.
