A 26-year-old female police officer is facing criminal charges over a car crash in Tasmania that killed a mother and son.

A woman aged in her 50s and a 16-year-old boy died following the collision near Penna in the state's southeast on May 10.

Tasmania Police have charged the constable, who has been stood down from duty, with two counts of causing death by negligent driving.

She is also accused of driving while disqualified, driving without due care and attention and two counts of contravening vehicle standards.

The officer was off duty at the time of the crash. She is expected to appear in Hobart Magistrates Court on December 9.

"It is not appropriate to make any further comment given the matter is now before the court," Tasmania Police said in a statement on Monday.
