South Australian police have abandoned a landfill site search after failing to find further remains of a man whose dismembered torso was discovered in a wheelie bin.
Search teams converged on the site at Uleybury in Adelaide's north on Monday tasked with locating the head and limbs of alleged murder victim Geoffrey McLean.
His torso was found on a vacant block at Salisbury South in October, several weeks after the 55-year-old was reported missing.
About 30 people were involved in searching the landfill site where up to 150 bales were examined.
But detectives abandoned their search on Wednesday without finding any further remains.
Detective Superintendant Des Bray said it was important to Mr McLean's family that all of his remains were found.
"While this was a challenging exercise, investigators were committed in eliminating the possibility that Geoffrey's remains were at the site and capable of being recovered," he said in a statement.
"Investigators cannot rule out that Geoffrey's remains may have been ended up at an alternative dump site where any future search or attempted recover would be extremely difficult.
"Investigators will continue to assess all information regarding the case in an effort to refine any future searches for Geoffrey's remains."
Four people have so far been charged over Mr McLean's death, two with murder and two with assisting an offender.
