Fast-food chain McDonald's Corporation is celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with a specially created Metaverse-themed VR exhibition inspired by Zodiac signs.

McDonald's on Tuesday greeted the citizens with a metaverse-themed exhibition as they rang in the Year of The Tiger. China is one of its important markets.

The Illinois-based company said on Monday that it has partnered with Humberto Leon, the co-founder of the fashion brand Opening Ceremony, to create an immersive experience featuring designs inspired by Zodiac signs. People would be able to see the designs through VR platforms.

So, is McDonald's metaverse gimmick signaling its impending foray into the virtual reality space? Metaverse has caught the attention of diverse companies in recent times.

Technology, automobile, and gaming companies are already seeing Metaverse as the next big opportunity for tapping into the consumers’ evolving habits.

Companies like Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Apple, and Sony are known to have made significant investments in the space or are closely looking into it for future endeavors. So, McDonald's metaverse act might help pull its food industry peers into the untapped world of Metaverse.

McDonald's metaverse exhibition

The exhibition themed "McDonald's Hall of Zodiacs: 2022 Lunar New Year with Humberto Leon" features a collection of 12 Zodiac signs. Visitors can check out the designs and experience this unique event on VR platforms like AltspaceVR and Spatial.

People can also see virtual sculptures inspired by traditional Chinese cork carving. The statues will appear in full and three-dimensional shapes with special effects and virtual reality.

Leon's work will also feature horoscope readings, based on the zodiac animal, on the year ahead. The exhibition’s interior design is created by feng shui expert Cliff Tan. 

People also can see the exhibition from their mobile phones or desktops. This 3D exhibit is the burger giant’s biggest marketing gimmick surrounding the metaverse.

The exhibition will continue until February 15.

 Metaverse is considered the next iteration of the internet. Big tech companies like Microsoft, Meta Platforms, etc., are investing heavily in the metaverse space. During the earnings call last week, Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook had said that he sees a “lot of potential” in the metaverse.
