A man has died after a boat capsized leaving him and his crewmate stranded in the water on the NSW south coast.

Emergency services were called following reports a small boat had capsized attempting to enter Narooma Bar about 11.25am on Wednesday.

A man, believed to be in his 70s, was rescued from the water by Marine Rescue personnel and taken to a nearby beach.

Ambulance paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive the man, police said.

A woman, believed to be in her 60s, was also rescued by a passing boat.

She was taken to Moruya Hospital for further treatment.

Officers from South Coast Police District and the Marine Area Command  commenced an investigation into the incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Narooma coastal bar is a popular waterway for general boating and fishing but visitors are advised to check the sometimes hazardous conditions before crossing the inlet.

Fisherman Harry De Haas, 75, died in 2020 after passing through the stretch of water when his small boat capsized.
