The Kookaburras will embrace a five-match home series against India as the perfect preparation for their bid to claim next year's Hockey World Cup.

The Australian team have come together in Adelaide for their first competitive matches since thrashing India 7-0 to win Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham in August.

The five games are also their only appearances before January's World Cup tournament in India.

"These games are really important for us to get back together again, it's been some time (since) we've been together," captain Eddie Ockenden told reporters.

"To get back together and prepare for the World Cup, having India coming over is fantastic.

"We love playing India. You've got the silver medallists and the bronze medallists from the Olympics last year which is fantastic.

"Really great competition for us to prepare and I'm sure they're thinking the same thing."

World Cup selection will also be on the line against India, who are coached by Australian Graham Reid, from Saturday.

Kookaburras coach Colin Batch is keen to find a supporting goalkeeper behind Andrew Charter and is also eyeing more midfielders and strikers.

"The players know selection's up for grabs," he said.

"So we push that aside, we play as well as we can and establish our connections and understanding within the squad."

Ockenden was confident Australia could reclaim the World Cup it last won in 2014.

"The good thing about playing hockey for Australia through my whole career is you have realistic expectations that when you go to a tournament, that we can say we want to win it," he said.

"We want to go there and win it."

Ockenden, 35, will play his 400th international in the second match against India , on Sunday, and doesn't appear to be thinking about retirement.

"It was a bit daunting a few months ago but I've come around to appreciating that it is a lot of games," he said.

"It's a big part of your life. It's been the major part of my life, really, for a long time.

"While I'm still enjoying it, loving it, if I still think I'm fast enough and good enough, then we'll see how it goes."
