Middle-distance star Jessica Hull has added an overdue maiden 1500m Australian title to her national record, seeing off a high-quality field in Brisbane.
Hull's impressive racing CV includes a host of national records and 1500m finals appearances at world and Olympic level.
But due to a variety of reasons - including time spent racing on the US college circuit - she had never before contested the metric mile at the Australian championships.
That box has now been ticked, with Hull storming home to win gold in a meet record of four minutes 04.19 seconds ahead of Birmingham Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abbey Caldwell and Tokyo Olympics finalist Linden Hall.
"For everything to come together and to even be on the start line today is great," said Hull.
"At 26 I'm still having firsts in my career with my first national 1500 final.
"There's always been a little bit of a chip there when you are the national record holder but you don't have a national title."
Hull will return to the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre on Sunday to chase a second-straight national 5000m crown in what could be a precursor to her racing program at the world championships in Budapest in August.
"I can prepare and have my fitness ready to do that," she said.
"(Athletics Australia pathways manager) Adam Didyk made a good point to me in conversation on Thursday.
"He said although there is only a 14-hour turnaround from the 1500 final to the 5K heats, at the Rio Olympics (Australians) Madeline Heiner and Genevieve (LaCaze) had a very similar situation with the steeplechase final and the 5K heats early the next morning.
"So they were able to do it, and it was very hot and humid in Rio which we won't be dealing with in Budapest.
"If you take away that element it might be doable."
