A Queensland hospital will undertake a full-scale review after a man was discharged then fatally shot by police.

The Ethical Standards Command are in Townsville with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission after police shot dead a man at an address in Kirwan on Friday.

Police were called after the man, identified as army veteran Steven Angus, 52, was allegedly threatening self-harm before approaching on scene police with a knife and was subsequently shot.

Mr Angus was discharged from Townsville Hospital earlier on Friday, one day after police were called to the same address for an alleged siege.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kieran Keyes said an investigation into the incident would occur.

"I can confirm that a comprehensive clinical review will be completed by the health service to determine what learnings or actions may result from this tragic incident," he said in a statement.

"However, I am unable to provide any details due to patient confidentiality. As the matter is under investigation by the Queensland Police Service, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further."

The incident was caught on police body camera video with up to six officers initially responding to the disturbance.

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson said investigations were continuing but could provide no further comment on Monday.
