Goals to come for Kerr: Matildas coach

Sam Kerr is going through a rare goalscoring lull for the Matildas but coach Tony Gustavsson is confident his captain will soon rediscover her shooting boots.

Kerr has not scored for Australia since April's friendlies against New Zealand, and last netted against a top-20 opponent when the Matildas drew 2-2 with Brazil in October 2021.

She missed June's friendlies against Spain and Portugal due to a planned break, while illness limited her to a cameo against South Africa in October.

Kerr had a slow start at club side Chelsea this season but has since scored seven goals in nine games across the Women's Super League and Champions League.

Gustavsson hopes the forward's form will continue to trend up, starting with Saturday's friendly against Sweden at Melbourne's AAMI Park.

"It's not about her being in best form now, it's (about) the World Cup," he said.

"But what we've seen in Chelsea, from having a slow start and not scoring, she's now back at scoring.

"If you can be playing that club form (and bring it) into us as well, that's the perfect scenario."

Caitlin Foord, Cortnee Vine, Mary Fowler and midfielder Katrina Gorry have all found the net in recent internationals.

Foord, Fowler and Hayley Raso have also been in good form at club level in England.

"If you look at some stats back in time, you can see players in form with clubs perform for national teams," Gustavsson said.

"Players that get a lot of minutes for clubs coming in, play in the national team - so 85 to 90 per cent of development and players in form is happening (at their) club and then they bring that.

'What I'm pleased about is (it's) not just Sam scoring goals now.

"If you look at our players coming into this camp in the last couple of weeks, we have goals and assists from a lot of players.

"So that makes me also curious, 'Can you bring that form into the game tomorrow?'. Then I'm excited."

Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson plans to utilise the knowledge of defender and Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson in his bid to quell Kerr's influence.

"She's an extraordinary, very good player," Gerhardsson told reporters.

"Her whole attitude is winning - not (just in) the games, it's every situation, one-versus-one, she wants to go.

"She's a clever player and speedy. She's one of the best strikers in the world. So it's also good for us to (practise) how to play her."
