A former NSW police officer has been charged with sexual assault following an investigation into an incident 14 years ago.

A court attendance notice was served on a 33-year-old man at a jail on Tuesday.

He has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent and demanding money with menace.

Authorities set up Strike Force Kain last year to investigate the incident which allegedly occurred in 2008.

The man previously worked as a constable in the force's central metropolitan division.

He will appear at Sutherland Local Court on December 20.
