The third wave of COVID-19 has started gripping the world. The end of the pandemic seems like a distant mirage. Many have become fearful and economies are suffering again.

At this point in time, when people are concerned about the rising daily numbers, the severity of pandemic is being overlooked. The healthcare system in China collapsed in the beginning of the pandemic. In India, in 2021, as the healthcare system collapsed, oxygen ran out and dead bodies piled up – many of whom haven’t officially been recognised as well.

But based on official numbers, which countries have received the deadliest pandemic blow? To gauge the deadly nature of pandemic, the death rate as well as spread of pandemic are important to take into account. So, if we take countries that have seen more than a million cases, there are 32 of them – as on date. We have compiled the list of five countries which suffered the deadliest blow of COVID-19 :

  1. Peru: This South American nation has seen the most severe impact of the pandemic. With just 2.12 million infections, the country has seen 196,950 deaths. That would mean a death rate of 9.27% -- of every 1,000 people that got infected 93 died – a statistic that would scare anyone in the world.
  2. Mexico: The North American country shares a long land border with the US – the country which has been worst hit by the pandemic, going by absolute numbers. However, when it comes to the fatality of pandemic, Mexico is far ahead of its neighbour. When it comes to death rate with cases over a million, the country’s numbers stand at 8.22%. Of the 2.97 million infected people in the country, 244,420 have died till now – meaning 82 deaths for every 1,000 infections.
  3. Romania: This Eastern European middle-income country comes distant third when it comes to the severity of the pandemic. The country’s death rate, as on date, stand at 3.16%. Of the 1.08 million cases in the country 34,316 people have lost their lives.
  4. South Africa: This country on the cape of Africa has been in news for constantly reporting high number of cases. The country stands fourth, when it comes to fatality of the pandemic – with a death rate of 2.96%. The country has seen 2.53 million cases, of which 74,813 have died.
  5. Indonesia: The recent bout of COVID-19 in this Southeast Asian country has been very deadly. This has shot up the country’s death rate to 2.92%. The country has seen 3.67 million virus cases, of which 107,096 people have died.
