Disclosure rules to tighten for NSW MPs

The NSW government will tighten up disclosure rules for politicians after a string of damaging corruption probes.

Under reforms announced on Saturday, prompted by two Independent Commission Against Corruption investigations and a public service review, MPs will be required to divulge their interests in trusts and any interests of immediate family members.

The disclosure change is in response to the corruption watchdog's investigation into disgraced former Liberal MP John Sidoti.

The now-independent Drummoyne MP was found to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct by improperly trying to influence local councillors to rezone properties his family owned.

Along with the requirement for MPs to disclose their family's interests, parliamentarians will also have to publicly disclose any conflicts of interest.

Amendments to legislation will clarify that the NSW Ministerial Code of Conduct applies to parliamentary secretaries.

In addition, the code will be amended to clarify requirements for ministers to always act in the public interest, rather than for their own or another person's benefit.

That change is in response to Operation Jersey, the commission's investigation into pork barrelling that followed criticism of the state government's controversial $252 million Stronger Communities Fund.

A NSW upper house inquiry found 95 per cent of the funds went to councils in coalition-held or marginal seats.

The government has also introduced legislation to strengthen the Government Sector Employment Act to uphold an "independent and apolitical public service".

The legislation is in response to a review by former NSW public service commissioner Graeme Head.
