According to Reuters, a group of China-linked cyberespionage has hacked Microsoft email inboxes. In a blog post, Microsoft said that the hackers had been remotely targeting the system by exploiting Microsoft mail server software flaws.
The company and outside researchers informed that the standard programmes could be exploited on the internet by hackers. The hackers used Microsoft's four newly discovered vulnerabilities in different versions of the software. The group calls itself HAFNIUM and is supposedly a state-sponsored entity operating from inside of China.

Cybersecurity firm Volexity wrote in a blog post in January that the hackers had found flaws in the Microsoft emails and were stealing the contents of various user mailboxes. With the information of the Microsoft Exchange server and the account, hackers were able to plunder these emails.
On the other hand, the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not reply to Reuters's request for comment over the espionage issue. Moreover, Beijing has denied its role in carrying cyberattacks in the past. The United States and many other nations have accused China many a time of cyberespionage.

Notably, before Microsoft's announcement, Mike McLellan, director of intelligence for Dell Technologies Inc's Secureworks, remarked on noticing a sudden surge in moves, touching Exchange servers on Sunday. He noted that the aggressive activity attracted the attention of the cybersecurity community towards the incident. Dell Technologies Inc's Secureworks confirmed around 10 customers were affected by the cyberespionage attack on Microsoft.
