Client background

With more than 8,000 employees located in 33 countries, the company provides advanced technology solutions designed to assist clients across the business cycle.

The business challenge

To support its growth goals and vision for the future, the client was looking to evolve from a professional services and consulting organization to a technology-centered software as a service (SaaS) product-driven organization. To support them in their mission, the client engaged Baker Tilly to bring their strategy to life by leading the planning and design of a new technical-focused business unit, developing a transition playbook and an execution road map for the client to develop and transition its resources into the new business unit in waves over the next six months. The effort was centered on the goal of designing a scalable organization that better utilizes its human capital supported with a matrix organizational model.

Strategy and solution

Baker Tilly prepared the client for implementation by conducting a series of workshops and interviews with their executive leadership team to align their future state vision with the organizational redesign. Organizational readiness and capability assessments were also conducted to assess roadblocks to success and define strategies to mitigate risks and potential issues. The project guiding principles included:

  • Creating an organizational model that enables growth and effectively optimizes the technology human capital
  • Managing change effectively to help employees understand the business case for the change and drive buy-in to the vision
  • Effective staging and pacing to successfully transition people to their new team and people managers

Following the assessment work, Baker Tilly applied industry best practices to create an optimal and sustainable business model that would support the organization’s desired growth. The matrix organizational structure was determined to be the best design because it promotes the sharing of resources to enhance utilization, improves internal communication and allows for more effective project delivery.

By aligning the client’s human capital strategy with their organizational design effort, we aimed to ensure a cohesive approach to growth and efficiency. Next steps for the client include executing on the provided road map to guide them on successful adoption and utilization of their reimagined workforce structure.
