- Australia’s vaccination rate is picking up.
Australia, which has been battling to contain the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, is seeing its infection curve flattening at the top, even as cumulative cases breached the 100,000 mark on Monday.
In the past one week, Australia has reported 11,931 infections, up just 1% from 11,777 cases recorded during the prior week. The lesser growth in fresh infections in the country is also complimented with increased vaccination drive, as the country mulls to unlock itself after 70%-80% of its residents are vaccinated.
The flattening of the COVID-19 curve has been primarily driven by the reduction of cases in the worst-hit state of New South Wales (NSW). The state, which was, earlier this month, reporting more than 1,500 cases daily, has seen its fresh COVID-19 infections fall below the psychological 1,000 mark a day. On Monday, 863 residents in Australia tested positive in the state – almost half of its peak levels.
However, the situation in Victoria keeps worsening, as it has overtaken NSW in the notorious distinction of reporting highest number of daily cases across the country. The state, which had less than 100 cases a day earlier this month, on Monday, reported 867 fresh infections – marginally more than that of Sydney.
The two states – that house about half of Australia’s 27 million population – account for two-thirds of fresh cases being reported in the country. Nationwide, Australia saw 1,887 cases and 11 deaths on Monday.
Cases cross 100,000
The total cases in the country, since the onset of the pandemic last year, have now breached the psychological 100,000-mark. Australia has now seen 100,919 cases since the onset of the pandemic and 1,256 Australians have lost their lives.
On the positive side, vaccinations across the country are picking up, and various states – like NSW and Victoria – are mulling to loosen restrictions.
