The Australian Federal government charges its ports to host nuclear-powered submarines from Britain and the United States.
As per media reports, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, the Aussie defence department would be analysing required support ensuring the frequent presence of nuclear-powered submarines from the two ally nations.
This decision was a part of the AUKUS partnership, which refers to a defence agreement between Australia, the UK, and the US last year.
Australia will likely become the first non-nuclear country to have nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS.
About AUKUS
AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership between UK, Australia and the US, that aims to provide nuclear-powered submarines to Australia in the Indo-Pacific region.
This partnership was announced in September 2021 that also focuses on increasing military power of each country by accelerating key technologies in their countries.
This partnership will likely succeed as a technology booster if it focuses on key tech streams identified in joint leaders’ statement. AUKUS can also succeed if all three nations including their defence organisations, research, and corporate sectors.
Moreover, this move can further provide the two nuclear powers better access to the South Pacific & Indian Ocean. It has the potential to challenge China's growing maritime power.
Initially, the US and British nuclear-powered submarines will be hosted at Australia's remote west coast -the Indian Ocean. However, there are chances that these submarines will be deployed on the east coast as well.
Bottom line
The Morrison government has flagged several expansions of Australia's defence capability. The government is also seeking to boost the country's defence forces by a third to 80,000 personnel by 2040.
