Australia will provide an initial $6 million in humanitarian assistance for those caught up in the conflict in Sudan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Saturday confirmed $1m would go to the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide immediate relief, including medical supplies, food, water, sanitation and emergency shelter.

A further $5m will go to Australia's international partners delivering humanitarian assistance in the region.

Sudan's health ministry reports 551 people have been killed and another 4926 people injured since fighting between the country's army and a paramilitary group started on April 15.

A further 845,000 people have been displaced as a result of the conflict, with most moving into neighbouring countries.

"We are deeply concerned by the loss of life and destruction that is taking place in Sudan," the federal government said in a statement on Saturday.

"We call on all parties to agree to a permanent cessation of hostilities. A negotiated solution is the only path forward for the people of Sudan."

The federal government also urged the warring parties to uphold international law and protect civilians, including health and humanitarian aid workers.

"It is essential that humanitarian agencies are given safe access to deliver life-saving assistance to the people of Sudan," the statement said.
