As areas of Australia's southeast coast are inundated by the worst flooding since 2011, tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes by Tuesday (March 1), and many more have been urged to prepare to flee.

What has happened so far?

According to police, the numbers of deaths have reached 10 after a woman in her 80s was discovered dead inside a flooded home.

Floodwaters from the downpour, which began late last week, have flooded many towns and bridges in Queensland and New South Wales and are spreading south, with heavy rains and possible flash flooding expected in Sydney.

Meanwhile, people stranded on flooded rooftops in eastern Australia were evacuated by military helicopters. Bureau of Meteorology estimates that Sydney may receive severe rains of up to 150 mm (6 inches) on Tuesday.

According to the authorities, around 50 individuals were rescued after being trapped on a bridge overnight when the water level rose quickly and flooded both ends.

On Monday (28 February 2022), the Brisbane River reached a height of 3.85 metres (12 feet, 3 inches). The officials stated that the water level was 61 centimetres (2 feet) lower than the 4.46 metre (14 foot, 3 inches) flood level reached in 2011.

Therefore, the Mary, Logan, Brisbane, Bremer rivers, and Warrill Creek are still under major flood warnings.

Bottom Line

On Tuesday, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, received over 80% of its annual rainfall in the last three days. More than 15,000 residences are estimated to have been inundated, and over 54,000 houses are without electricity in Brisbane.
