ELCOMA India in its initiative to ensure that the Lighting Industry sees technological advancements, has ensured that the Ministry of Urban Development has mandated all State Government to change the street lighting into LED's in their domain. This initiative of changing the street lights is directed for the entire country which boasts of 27.5 million such street lights. This change will now enable to save more than 5,000 MW of electricity consumption over a period of 3 years, which gives ELCOMA India the boost to continue their initiative of witnessing the Lighting Industry bring in technological advancements in Lighting.

The mandate by the Ministry of Urban Development was possible post Bureau of Energy efficiency (BEE) came out with a survey on the Sreet Lights of the entire India. The survey concluded that more than 80% of street lights in India have been installed till date in a haphazard manner without considering the pole distance, type of luminaire, height of luminaire, etc for different streets and which had specific requirements to enable good lighting during the night. This survey brought to the forefront that not only the Lighting has to change but every aspect of street light has to take a complete overhaul. The government has appointed Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to undertake the project of supporting, financing and installation in the entire country. It is now decided that all the Street Lights should be changed in a phased manner. EESL on its part has started working towards the preparations of specifications for suppliers' qualifying requirements to ensure a good quality of LED street lights.

Speaking on the sidelines of the programmes, Mr. Shyam Sujan, Secretary General, ELCOMA said, "Elcoma India has played a very crucial role in bringing the government to understand the benefits of energy conservation and how successfully this can be replicated by replacing the street lights with LED lamps across the country. This was also possible post Elcoma's initiative of holding lighting workshops and conference in various state capitals to bring in awareness about various technologies for energy conservation and how street lights can play a major part in this conservation. This education to the Industry as well as the Government was also possible through our annual exhibition - LIGHT INDIA Exhibition which gets to the forefront the new technologies that the industry offers to the community as whole. The exhibition helped us to reach out to the Government and other stake holders on how they too can enable and bring about a change in the Lighting scenario of India".

Speaking on the initiative Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL said, "Implementation through Energy Service Company model provides a transparent and efficient performance based mechanism to municipalities/Urban Local Bodies to implement energy efficiency projects without having to budget for the capital costs. It is the endeavour of EESL to promote such delivery mechanisms which can be easily replicated so that the potential can be harnessed in an accelerated manner which saves energy as well as costs"
