Scotiabank is taking a significant step to assist recent immigrants in Canada with the expansion of its partnership with Nova Credit, a leading cross-border credit bureau. This collaboration aims to help newcomers from select countries access higher credit limits by allowing them to utilize their existing credit history from their home countries when applying for credit online.

For many immigrants, the transition to Canada can be challenging, particularly when it comes to establishing credit. Credit invisibility—where individuals lack a local credit record—can be a substantial barrier, making it difficult to access financial products essential for settling in. According to a Statistics Canada report analyzing data from 2015 to 2019, approximately 26% of credit-invisible economic families were immigrants. Furthermore, newcomers who had been in Canada for less than two years were nearly twice as likely to be credit-invisible compared to those born in Canada.

Tanya Eisener, Senior Vice President of Retail Customer at Scotiabank, highlights the importance of supporting immigrants in their financial journey. “Canada relies heavily on the success of our immigrant population and the contributions they make to our economy,” she states. Eisener emphasizes that in today’s digital landscape, individuals shouldn’t have to start over with their credit history when moving to a new country. By accessing foreign credit reports through Nova Credit, Scotiabank can better understand an immigrant's credit risk, facilitating a smoother transition into Canadian life.

Since launching the Nova Credit partnership in 2023, Scotiabank has empowered newcomers to access their foreign credit reports, enabling them to request credit or increased credit limits. Remarkably, clients can now qualify for credit limits up to twice as high as they would have received without this innovative capability.

Guneet Saluja, a Senior Financial Advisor in Brampton, Ontario, shares a success story that illustrates the program’s impact. “I recently had a client who came to Canada from India. Through Nova Credit's service, we were able to use his home country's credit history to offer him a higher limit on his credit card than most of his newcomer friends,” Saluja explains. “My clients are excited to be in Canada and enthusiastic about contributing to their new home. Helping them leverage their previous credit experience to launch this new chapter is incredibly rewarding.”

This initiative not only aids individuals but also contributes positively to the Canadian economy. By facilitating access to credit, Scotiabank is helping newcomers establish financial stability, allowing them to make significant investments in their new lives—whether it’s securing housing, purchasing a vehicle, or starting a business.

Moreover, the partnership with Nova Credit aligns with Scotiabank’s broader commitment to diversity and inclusion. By recognizing the unique challenges faced by immigrants and providing tailored financial solutions, the bank is fostering a more inclusive financial environment.

Scotiabank's collaboration with Nova Credit represents a crucial advancement in addressing the financial needs of immigrants in Canada. By allowing newcomers to leverage their existing credit histories, Scotiabank is helping to eliminate barriers to credit and support their integration into Canadian society. This initiative not only empowers individuals but also strengthens the economy by harnessing the potential of Canada’s diverse population. As the program continues to evolve, it promises to provide essential support to newcomers, facilitating their journey toward financial independence and success in their new home.
