AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. (TSX:ATRL), a globally recognized engineering services and nuclear company, has been appointed to provide critical nuclear and infrastructure expertise for the design of nuclear-powered submarine facilities in the UK. The appointment comes as part of an expanded partnership with Rolls-Royce Submarines and Mott MacDonald under the PROPEL joint venture. The project involves the expansion of Rolls-Royce’s submarine site in Derby, England, to meet the growing demand from the UK Royal Navy and the tri-lateral AUKUS submarine program, which will support Australia in acquiring its first conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
Expansion to Meet Increasing Defense Demands
The facility expansion will address the rising demand for nuclear-powered submarines, driven by significant defense initiatives, including the AUKUS security agreement between Australia, the UK, and the US. AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald will work closely as part of the PROPEL joint venture to design the new nuclear manufacturing facilities. These facilities will play a critical role in increasing the delivery rate of nuclear-powered submarines for the UK Royal Navy and the Australian Navy, ensuring that national security needs are met with enhanced submarine capabilities.
Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRéalis, commented, “Demand for defense equipment and infrastructure is increasing, driven by the shift to strengthen national security from governments worldwide. AtkinsRéalis is well-positioned to support this rapid rise in major defense programs through our multidisciplinary expertise across defense, nuclear, and complex infrastructure. This appointment reflects our ability to design and deliver highly specialized facilities that will help to increase the delivery rate of submarines for this critical program.”
Leveraging Nuclear and Defense Expertise
AtkinsRéalis brings a wealth of expertise to the program, including extensive experience in designing and constructing complex defense and nuclear infrastructure. The company is already involved in the UK’s GW-scale nuclear build programs at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, in addition to providing services for nuclear site operations, maintenance, decommissioning, and waste management.
Joe St. Julian, President of Nuclear at AtkinsRéalis, emphasized, “The design and build of nuclear-powered submarines involves highly complex platform requirements and safety standards, as well as extensive knowledge of maritime infrastructure and submarine facilities. Alongside our nuclear fuel management knowledge, AtkinsRéalis will bring significant experience to the program through our expertise in maritime and complex defense infrastructure as well as designing civil nuclear at scale.”
This appointment builds on AtkinsRéalis’ long-standing relationships with Rolls-Royce and its strong presence in the UK defense sector, further cementing its role as a key player in delivering high-profile defense projects. The company’s involvement in the AUKUS submarine program and other major defense initiatives showcases its commitment to advancing national security through innovative engineering solutions.
