  • Trans Mountain declared that it is halting construction activities on its pipeline extension project until early January 2021 due to safety concerns.
  • Officials from the company and the Canada Energy Regulator informed that a worker was critically injured on December 16 at the construction site in Burnaby, British Columbia.
  • Trans Mountain, in an official statement, stated it is enforcing a voluntary, project-wide shut down from December 18 to January 4, 2021. Operations at the Burnaby site have already been terminated since the day of the accident.
  • Trans Mountain President and CEO Ian Anderson explained through a press release that the company’s priorities are to ensure the safety of constructers and preserving a safe work culture as the construction work close to successful completion. Through the last two months, the company has experienced safety lapses at its sites that are intolerable.
  • On the project progress, the company said that 20 per cent of the project has been achieved this year and cautioned that safety is “one of the greatest” concerns.
  • Trans Mountain will require thousands of workers for next year’s construction peak phase.
  • The federal government sanctioned the Trans Mountain pipeline project in June last year. The 980 kilometres-long-pipeline will run from Alberta to the British Columbia coast. The net cost of the project is likely to be C$ 12.6 billion. The pipeline will start its service in December 2022.
