Woodside Energy (ASX: WDS), a significant player in the oil and gas industry, has finalised the sale of a 10% non-operating participating interest in the Scarborough joint venture to LJ Scarborough. This move comes as part of Woodside's strategic initiatives, particularly its collaboration with LNG Japan, established earlier in August. The collaboration encompasses several key elements, including equity participation in the Scarborough JV, potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) offtake, and cooperation on exploring new energy opportunities.
In exchange for its equity stake in the joint venture, Woodside received a substantial sum of AU$910 million. This transaction underscores LNG Japan's confidence in the long-term viability of natural gas as an essential energy source, especially amid the ongoing energy transition.
Meg O'Neill, CEO of Woodside, expressed the company's satisfaction with the completion of the sale to LNG Japan, highlighting it as a significant milestone in their journey towards the first LNG cargo from the Scarborough project, slated for 2026. O'Neill emphasized the value that customers like LNG Japan place on gas as a reliable and sustainable energy solution amidst evolving energy landscapes.
Moreover, Woodside welcomed the equity investment from Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (Jogmec) in LJ Scarborough. This investment from Jogmec further validates the strategic importance of the Scarborough gas project, emphasizing its role in bolstering Japan's energy security.
Currently, Woodside holds a majority 90% interest in the Scarborough joint venture and will continue to serve as the operator. With the completion of the transaction with JERA, announced on February 23, Woodside's interest in the venture will be adjusted to 74.9%.
The sale of a portion of Woodside's interest in the Scarborough joint venture not only demonstrates the company's strategic alignment with key partners but also underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. As Woodside progresses towards its LNG production targets, collaborations with industry partners like LNG Japan and Jogmec are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy supply and security, both regionally and globally.
