  • Lithium Universe completes acquisition of solar panel recycling innovator
  • Focus set on silver recovery through advanced microwave technology
  • Aims to capitalise on growing demand for sustainable resource extraction

Lithium Universe (ASX:LU7) has successfully wrapped up its acquisition of New Age Minerals, securing global rights to cutting-edge recycling technology developed by Macquarie University. This strategic move underscores the company's commitment to sustainable solutions in renewable energy and resource recovery. Though not part of the ASX 200 stocks, the company’s latest steps position it prominently in the green innovation space.

At the core of this acquisition is the microwave joule heating (MJH) platform—a next-generation process that enables efficient separation of materials in photovoltaic (PV) solar panels without relying on extreme temperatures or hazardous chemicals. Unlike traditional recycling methods, this technology enables the delamination of materials such as glass and silicon in a more environmentally conscious manner.

Following a detailed review, Lithium Universe has chosen to prioritise silver extraction in the first phase of its commercial rollout of the MJH process. Silver is a key component in PV solar cells, playing a critical role in enabling the flow of electricity. With solar energy systems gaining traction worldwide, the demand for silver continues to rise, presenting a compelling opportunity for material recovery from end-of-life panels.

The company views this demand trend as a significant motivator for accelerating its entry into the resource recovery market. With the MJH platform currently in the patent application stage, Lithium Universe is undertaking rigorous research and patent analysis to optimise silver recovery from discarded solar equipment.

Work is already underway to establish deeper collaboration with the Macquarie University research team. The goal is to refine the MJH technology further and bring it closer to a scalable commercial application. This initiative aligns with broader global efforts to support clean energy infrastructure while minimising environmental waste.

Through this acquisition, Lithium Universe sets its sights on becoming a leader in critical metals recovery. The move reflects a forward-thinking approach to sustainability, offering potential breakthroughs in how materials are recycled and reused in the green energy ecosystem. By focusing on innovation and strategic resource use, the company aims to pave a path toward a more circular economy within the renewable energy sector.
